I love having perfectly manicured nails, however I never seem to have enough time to do my nails properly and they always seemed to be chipped and smudged within the first few days (sometimes within a few hours…I am that impatient to let them dry and usually paint them about 2 minutes before getting into bed at night)
That is why, until a few months ago, I was totally obsessed with my Gel nails (Gellux nails to be precise). They have a great colour range and more importantly stay shiny and chip-free, sometimes for up to 3 weeks. I had them re-done time and time again but never really noticed what it was doing to my natural nails. My nails grow so long with gels on generally, but probably because I can’t pick at them and they don’t split so easy.
However purely due to schedule and not being able to fit in having them done, I ended up going bare for the first time in nearly a year. I looked down at my hands and wanted to cry; some of my nails had split nearly half way down the nail bed and they were so so weak and brittle and constantly splitting that some were nearly bleeding. I ran (yes, ran – was horrified!) to my local Boots and spent a fortune on products to try and help, but after two weeks I wasn’t noticing any difference. My nails were bendy with the top layer just peeling back and quite sore to touch.
Now, I just want to say here, I think there is a reason that my nails were particularly badly damaged. The nail bar I was going to didn’t soak off my nails ever; they would just file them off (so that my fingers were almost burning and the dust from the polish would cover my hand and go into my rings which I hated every time). But…the place was just around the corner from my house so it was just too convenient. I have since spoke to beauticians and nail specialists who say you should always have the gel nails soaked off, even if just initially and then filed at the end. The filing process is thinning the nail and is too harsh for the nail bed, unfortuantley they usually do it purely because it is quicker than letting them soak off for 10 / 15 minutes and so therefore they can fit more clients in.
Poppy Recommends: Always ask in the salon if they soak off the nails each time and check your nails between changing colours so you can get a better idea yourself on how they are looking.
Since seeing the damage to my nails, it made me start looking online looking for answers, I was surprised to see how many other people have had the same problem. It thought it was just me as most people rave about gel nails, but after doing some snooping around online I saw that lots of people were in the same situation as me.
I also spoke to a colleague at work who told me about a product called Rejuvacote by Duri Nail that she had bought in America that was ‘the best thing she had ever used to help grow her nails’. As I sat next to her every day, I noticed that her nails, which she said had never grown in her whole life for more than a couple of weeks, started to transform into lovely long healthy looking nails…I was sold ! I shopped around and found one on Amazon for around £10.
Poppy Recommends: Not buying beauty products online, especially eBay and Amazon, as unfortunately there are a lot of fakes out there. I bought a fake Urban Decay eyeshadow online years ago, it looked ‘legit’ online and the packaging was almost identical to the genuine one I already had but you could instantly tell from the shades and fall-out of powder that it was a fake. If you do end up buying, always do your research on the seller, their location, the reviews and everything else they sell and you can hopefully find a good one!
From Duri’s website:
Rejuvacote “the nail doctor” will heal and cure your split, cracked and acrylic-eaten nails. In a matter of weeks you will enjoy the look and feel of strong, vital, natural nails. It’s not a promise, it’s a guarantee.
It takes only 2-3 weeks to see dramatic improvement on your nails when you use Rejuvacote. It will force your nails to grow stronger, healthier and longer.
After applying this treatment for one week, I saw a noticeable difference in how soft, smooth, and healthy my nail beds appeared to be. I know it sounds too good to be true, but I really could see a difference immediately! Rejuvacote really has done wonders for me and I would highly recommend it! It isn’t just a nail strengthener but also a great base coat, it dries super-quick and really helps to make my nail polish last longer. My nails are not back to the way they were but are a million times better and are starting to grow more and split less.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Gel nails, applied properly are fantastic for special occasions and I know I will have them again in the future but it is important to have breaks in-between too. I am glad I have found something that can help to keep my natural nails strong!
