Christmas Gift Ideas #1 – The Brownie & Cookie Jars

Brownie Jar Mix

Christmas is officially on it’s way, am I excited….YES! As soon as red cups arrive and the clocks change, I can’t stop thinking about anything else. I’m definitely one for traditions and so like to be organised in time so I can really enjoy the festive period without flapping at the last minute. I love homemade gifts at christmas, anything from home stamped wrapping paper to homemade crackers.

I thought I would share some of these craft ideas over the next few weeks in the lead up to Christmas, they are all in-expensive but look fantastic and always go down well with the family, especially if you have lots of people to buy presents for and fed up of giving the same things year on year.

A few Christmasses ago, I was given a cookie jar as a present, it was a beautifully wrapped kilner jar with the recipe tag attached. It was basically a one bowl mix , so super easy and  yet made the most tastiest cookies ever! More than just tasty, it was such a thoughtful present, it wasn’t anything designer or over the top, but you could tell the person had gone to a lot of effort in putting it all together…that and the fact I love cookies and who doesn’t love a kilner jar for storing baking bits or even beauty products!

I always like to get people little extra presents and so this year I have put together some jars for friends and families. I have made brownie and cookies mixes and so I thought I would share the recipes with you!

Cookie Jar Recipe

CHOCOLATE CHIP & SMARTIE COOKIE JAR MIX

(Makes: 1 jar, enough for 24 cookies)

Ingredients:

210g plain flour

3/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

100g caster sugar

240g plain chocolate chips

100g smarties (optional – could add other chocolate shell sweets instead)

110g dark brown soft sugar

Method

Following the order above, layer the ingredients one by one into a clean glass 1L jar. Pressing down in-between to try and get clean lines in-between each ingredient (think the sand art bottles you did as a child by the beach)! Seal with lid, decorate as you wish.

Attach a recipe and method card with the following directions: Empty contents of jar into a large bowl. In separate bowl combine 170g butter, 1 1/2 eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Beat until creamy. Add to dry mixture. Drop tablespoons of the batter onto ungreased baking trays. Bake in a preheated 190 C / Gas 5 oven for 8 to 10 minutes.

To make the jars look extra fancy, I decorate with ribbon and added a bag of gold coins to the side.
