Happy New Year to all you lovely people! It is that time of year again, I hope you all had a fantastic festive break. I LOVE Christmas – it is the perfect break to spend time with family and friends, and do a whole load of nothing. I am not a big fan of NYE though, paying a fortune for local clubs and taxis and then missing the chime of 12 o’clock! However, this time of year does always make me reflect back on the previous year and I get a big kick of inspiration and feel I need to grab a notebook and starting MAKING LISTS (I love a List – I even have notebooks that say ‘My Lists’ on the front!) and planning all the things that I want to do in 2017.
Christmas time for me is the only break in the year where I really get the chance to take a second to think and reflect (+ eat a whole load of Quality Street and wear PJs for 5-days straight)!
I do not love New Year’s resolutions, especially ones involving giving lots of things up and planning to lose half your body weight and then feeling miserable if it doesn’t go to plan. January can be a depressing month as it is and I hate that every other advert is pushing weight loss and diets. I feel there is a lot of pressure on people, especially women, at this time of year to basically reinvent themselves.
Instead, I like to set targets – I would like to do a bit more of this, visit there or learn something new this year. I think it is all about setting realistic aims and goals, with treats or plans as a reward when you achieve them.
I started this last year, instead of giving something up or cutting out all of your favourite foods, I decided I wanted to do more for other people and to start giving blood. I did some research and booked an appointment using their online system. I know that some people are squeamish and the thought can make you a bit queasy, but it really isn’t that bad. It only takes 5-10 minutes for the donation, with a chat before and free biscuits after!. The people at my local centre are absolutely fantastic – so patient and kind, and talk you through everything.
Give Blood if you can, I think it is a great thing to do, and it really does help to save lives.
(I mentioned the biscuits, right?)
DRINK MORE WATER
I think I am pretty good with keeping hydrated, but particularly at work, COFFEE usually wins, on being offered a coffee…I seem to say yes without even thinking. Next thing I know it is 6pm and I have had 8 coffees and am having a severe caffeine crash! I recently downloaded iDrated Water, an app which monitors your water intake each day. You can target how much water you want to drink each day,and then you can keep track of your intake. It’s really quick and easy to log what you’ve drunk, and you can set reminders throughout the day to keep you on track.
TRAVEL & EXPLORE
This is what I love about January, sitting down with M and starting to plan all the trips and places we want to go this year – travel is so important to me. I love exploring the world and think it is the best gift to anyone, letting them see all that this fantastic world has to offer. Look out for my upcoming blog on our recent trip to Amsterdam, and an AMAZING hotel chain we stayed at for the first time –CitizenM.
READ MORE BOOKS – A SIMPLE PLEASURE
Inspired by my Mum – each year she sets a target to read a particular number of books, and then usually reaches her target in July! She writes down and keeps track of all the books she reads and always has great recommendations. I love reading, my problem is I buy a lot of books and then don’t get round to finishing them. And yes, like most people, I have books on the shelf that I haven’t even managed to start! I don’t know if I am at the point to read one every week (ok, I’m not), but I definitely want to make sure I spend more time with one of life’s simpler pleasures – a cup of tea and a good book, snuggled under a blanket in winter, or sat in the garden in the summer – and it’s FREE!
It is quite easy, especially at this time of year to feel bad about yourself, to restrict everything and feel even more sad. I want to try and make sure I am staying positive in all aspects of my life. Sometimes things don’t happen exactly when you might want them to, or in the way you might have expected, but it is important to think of the good things. Of course I want to be more healthy, active and slimmer but trying to take all of that on at once, from experience, will only make me feel worse.
I want to try and remind myself of the small achievements and stay positive, even if things take a bit longer, it is much more important to be happy and try to worry and stress less. Keep smiling! BABY STEPS!
I’m really enjoying blogging at the moment and want to blog as much as I can this year.
Love to know how you spent your NYE and what your plans are for 2017!
